Hello! We’re Steve & Heather Scar
Owners and operators at Meadowlark Farm: a veteran-owned, family farm located near Adair, Iowa. We take pride in knowing and caring for each of the animals we've been blessed with on our farm. We specialize in Kunekunes - a rare, grass-grazing heritage hog breed. All our pigs are slowly pasture-raised with lots of fresh air, sunlight, and belly rubs :) We finish our hogs on non-GMO feed and being a small farm, you're able to have confidence in where your meat comes from. Thank you for supporting our Iowa family farm!
At Meadowlark Farm
Our goal is to live a life that honors God, fulfill the dreams of those who came before us, and prepare the way for future generations. It’s truly a family affair. We take pride in raising our Kunekune pigs and crafting pork tallow products with the same care. Raised without hormones or antibiotics, our pigs graze on open pastures, ensuring high-quality, nutrient-rich products. We also believe in giving you the confidence to know exactly where, how, and by whom your skincare is made. We're honored to be your family’s trusted source for sustainably sourced, natural tallow products; local, farm fresh Kunekune pork; and exceptional Kunekune genetics.
A Family Legacy in Farming
Farming runs deep in our family. Steve grew up on a rural farm south of Earlham, where he raised Spotted Poland China hogs with his family. After serving 20 years in the Air Force’s Search and Rescue Division, with five official saves and numerous assists, Steve retired and returned to his roots. The taste of Kunekune pork brought back cherished memories of his childhood, and we knew it was time to start raising these exceptional pigs on our own farm.
As for me, Heather, I grew up on a small farm south of Stuart and I’m a Kindergarten teacher. My family raised a variety of animals, and my grandpa, Leo Marckmann, always dreamed of passing on the family's farming legacy. Today, we carry that tradition forward on our family farm. We raised our six kids here after retiring from the military, and we’re passing those same values onto our grandchildren. .
Personal Connections to Customers
To us, customers are more than clients - you're part of our extended family. We enjoy getting to know you by name, learning your preferences, and making sure your experience with our farm is as personal as it is delicious. Whether you're picking up your favorite cut of pork or trying something new, we take pride in building lasting relationships with those who support us.
Our commitment.
-
Superior Genetics
We are committed to continually improve our herd’s genetics. We have worked hard since 2018 to improve rate of gain - our current goal is 300# at a year. We are the only breeder in the U.S. who uses ultrasound to improve the meat to fat ratio to produce practical pork genetics in Kunekunes.
-
Better Nutrition
Studies show pasture-raised pork is more nutritionally dense. No hormones, no routine antibiotics, never any shots containing mRNA. Flavorful and moist pork raised in our open pastures in Iowa.
-
USDA Inspected
We process our meat at a state inspected, locally-owned butcher shop to ensure the highest quality of pork reaches your fork. Our butcher shop is CIS certified to sell across state lines.
