Conformation Standards

It all begins with standards. As an IKHR registered breeder, all breeding stock that is sold with SCR prefix upholds the IKHR conformation standards: sound feet and legs, great underlines, solid bone, and good, solid bodies, with special attention to the head - wide and dished, which identifies the breed as a grazer not prone to root and is considered unique to the breed.

Efficient Stock

Our stock that we sell (unless specified otherwise) has the potential to reach 200 pounds or more in 12 months. This is key to a faster turn over in your breeding program leading to meat in your freezer sooner, less impact on your pastures, and maturity in your herd sooner (see the YouTube link below for more info). We have taken the guesswork out of growing out larger Kunekune genetics; that means less weighing and adjusting for you, and while we cannot guarantee weights once they leave our farm, we will mentor you and teach you to produce your own genetics to raise efficient stock.

Carcass Merit Ultrasound

We believe there is much to be improved in the Kunekune carcass. By growing out most of our large herd to one year and measuring with ultrasound, we can improve the loin eye, back fat, and marbling of our stock. Better measurements in these areas are highly heritable and passed on to our stock. This also improves the quality of pork and the tasting experience of customers. Find our more about carcass merit in the youtube link attached below.

Currently, we have produced 15 champions. We are proud of the work we do with the Heartland Kunekune show to encourage genetic improvement and to promote and preserve the breed. We work hard to promote WIN-WIN relationships. Don’t just take our word for it regarding our genetics. See what the experts have to say about SCR Kunekunes.
